Calligraphy is a part of every Japanese child?s life, since every student studies it during elementary and junior high school. On top of this, there is also a special type of penmanship, called kakizome, which is used to welcome the new year. This calligraphy is created using a large brush on paper approximately three times bigger than usual.
On January 8th, class J4B took a break from their entrance exam preparations to try this Japanese tradition. They chose the following auspicious kanji to bring in the new year:
「遠遠流長」  The strong relationship between China and Japan has a long history.
「道」  To choose my own path and be happy.
「福」  Asking for happiness.
「縁」  To have good relationships.
「家」   To return to my country to ease homesickness.
「生」  To be successful.
「極」  To keep fighting until success is achieved.
「易」  The name of a famous Chinese calligrapher.
On top of this, you also wrote special presents to your teacher, Ms. N, which show what a humorous and close-knit class you are.
Each kanji had a personal meaning to you and even if it took numerous attempts you didn?t stop writing that character until you were completely satisfied. You all did such a wonderful job, well done!
