April 30th was a beautiful day that finally felt like summer, which was perfect for a field trip. This time we decided to go for training at the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Centre.
We watched prevention training videos on three possible emergency scenarios: earthquakes, smoke, and extinguishing fires. After this, we were able to physically experience a grade 6 earthquake and practice what to do to properly protect ourselves. While the room was shaking, we hid under a table and learned not to leave until all the shaking had completely subsided.
Although most people believe that Japan experiences numerous earthquakes, they actually don’t happen all that frequently. However, being able to feel high-grade shaking in a training facility like this will help everyone react more easily and without panicking if they are caught in a real earthquake.
Besides the earthquake training, we also learned what to do in the case of a fire. They taught us valuable information that all people should know, such as how to escape when surrounded by smoke and how to how use a fire extinguisher properly.
The students were thankful for the hands-on training, commenting that they learned a lot about how to act in an emergency situation. All of the staff at the Learning Centre were incredibly helpful with all of their guidance, and we’d like to thank them for everything they showed us.
